ABOUT THE CONCERT
Together, the Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg and the Czech Pavel Haas Quartet create a perfect musical organism driven by obsession for music, perfectionism, and sensitivity to detail. In their case, awards from publications such as BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone, as well as from Diapason d’Or are just icing on the cake – the great results of their cooperation. With the combination of Giltburg and the Haas Quartet, the Dvořák Prague Festival is ushering in much more – an introduction to the festival’s future orientation. All of this is happening symbolically on the day of the 180th anniversary of Antonín Dvořák’s birth.
After a period of several years, the prestigious Dvořák Collection series is now moving on from orchestral works to chamber music, with string quartets playing a major role. One could hardly imagine a better ensemble than the Pavel Haas Quartet – Czech and foreign critics regard them as superlative interpreters of Dvořák. At the same time, this means that the Dvořák Collection will be overlapping with the Chamber Series, which has become very popular and fills the Rudolfinum just as reliably as the world’s famous orchestras. This is undoubtedly also thanks to the curators of the Chamber Series; this year, Boris Giltburg is serving in that role.
Last but not least, we must highlight the juxtaposition of Dvořák with Robert Schumann offered by the programme of the joint concert of Giltburg and the Pavel Haas Quartet. In addition to Schumann’s songs, Dvořák regarded the German composer’s chamber music and piano works as his best music. It is therefore logical for the two masters to be presented in a concentrated encounter combining piano with a chamber ensemble.
