István Várdai — violoncello“For my art I need to know the taste, fragrance, culture and vibration of this world.”The prestigious Prix Montblanc for the most gifted young artist in the world, first place at the ARD Munich competition and the International Cello Competition in Geneva; the Pierre Fournier Award; the “Coup de Coeur Breguet” and the Junior Prima Prize — these are just some of the international prizes which the Hungarian cellist István Várdai has been awarded in his relatively short professional musical career. Critics say that his playing style is very modern, though he is able to conjure up a special connection with older musical traditions. He has worked with international musicians such as Gidon Kremer, András Schiff and Susanna Mälkki. Czech audiences will also be pleased to hear that his discography features music by Leoš Janáček and Bohuslav Martinů. One of the most promising contemporary musical talents will be playing a legendary instrument from the workshop of Antonio Stradivarius, the “Ex Du Pré-Harrell” from 1673.
