Otello

Often referred to as the greatest Italian operatic tragedy, Otello is a brilliant combination of Verdi's music and Shakespeare's famous tragedy in a unique treatment by librettist Arrigo Boito. Both Shakespeare (and Boito) and Verdi lead the protagonist deeper and deeper into the abyss. The opera begins with an evocative image of a storm and the jubilant entry of Othello, the commander of the Venetian fleet, who returns to Cyprus against all the forces of nature and declares victory over the Ottoman Empire. But she makes a fatal mistake: she believes the wrong man. Iago, a ruthless schemer consumed by a lust for power, turns Othello's life into a dark tragedy.
